Mathematics and techniques are described for determining the transverse geometry of cotton fibers using the Fibrograph. Data obtained with the technique are compared to data obtained with the Arealometer. Correlation coefficients and standard estimates of error using projected mass, respec tively, are 0.969 and 15.0 mm-1 for specific area and 0.978 and 5.4 μm 2 for cross-sectional area. Calcu lated values of maturity index compared with values of the Causticaire maturity index had a correlation coefficient of 0.891 and a standard estimate of error of 3.0 when projected mass was used in the calcula tion.
