Abstract
Paper presented at the World Library and Information Congress, 69th IFLA General Conference, Berlin, Germany, 1–8 August 2003. Provides an overview of library and information services in South Africa; the historical background of library associations in South Africa and their current position; issues facing library and information services in South Africa; strategies adopted by the Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) to develop the profession and library and information services in South Africa, and the way forward. The big question is, can library associations assist in bringing about social change?
