This paper outlines case studies of three recent high-profile new art galleries in Europe. The common element to each of these projects is the significant use of daylight in the gallery spaces, and the paper investigates the ways in which it has been utilised. The highly variable nature of natural lighting presents a particular challenge in gallery lighting owing to concerns about conservation. Some of the solutions, which could be employed in future projects, are discussed.
