Abstract
CAWTE (and KIDSON) report on studies carried out among the Kalumburu, an isolated group of aborigines living on the north coast of Western Australia and among the Walbiri of Yuendumu settlement northwest of Alice Springs. They investigated beliefs held by these peoples about the nature of sickness, and the techniques employed and training of native 'doctors' as related to these beliefs. The authors also give incidence figures for psychosis among the Kalumburu. In a paper of monographic proportion, PFEIFFER describes trance states in artistic performances, religious trance rituals, and states of clouded consciousness in Indonesian tribes. An account is given of Latah, Mata gelap, and of Amok. The report is based on the literature and on the author's own observations.
