There are reasons to give special attention to the depression of the 1930s when attempting to estimate the relationship between economic conditions and congressional election results. In this analysis, a separate independent variable is used to account for the effects of the depression. Regression equations are estimated with and without the depression variable in order to allow for comparison. The relationship between economic conditions and election results is different when the depression variable is included.
