Abstract
This article reviews the occurrence of cannel coal pendants on archaeological sites in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, West Virginia, and northern Maryland. A table lists the sites, drainages, and the types and numbers of pendants found in Pennsylvania; weights and measurements are provided for pendants found at four sites: Bunola, Crow, McJunkin, and Mapletown. As part of the research, two types of pendants, imitation bear canines and imitation elk canines, were replicated using Butler County, Pennsylvania cannel coal. Results about the study of manufacturing techniques and the patterns of wear from drilling and use are presented. The article concludes with discussions about the distribution of the pendants and comments on the cultural affiliation of their makers.
