Abstract
Examination of the elemental makeup of the cough can provide insights into its cause. Cough is the result of an Excess or Deficiency of Qi in the Four Elements, which are concerned with its genesis. Cough may be due to External or Internal, Heat or Cold, Excess or Deficient, Yang or Yin etiology. By hearing the patient cough, it is possible to deduce which of the 5 kinds of cough is present. From this, it is possible to deduce a sound basis of the etiology of this condition, which the subsequent history and examination confirm.
