Abstract
Addictive drugs may have long-term impacts on the body. Some of these effects can have characteristic features virtually independent of the different chemical structures among the commonly used substances (e.g., alcohol, cocaine, and methamphetamine). This paper presents observations of Traditional Chinese Medicine signs and symptoms among individuals being treated for addictions to alcohol or illicit drugs in a 28-day residential program in the western United States. In particular, one case is highlighted. A careful medical acupuncture history and examination of pulse and tongue were collected and Chinese herbal supplements were prescribed. The observations were consistent with a pattern described as Yin Deficiency with Empty Heat, and the case patient responded favorably to an herbal protocol that is described as nourishing Yin and clearing Empty Heat.
