Abstract
Different ways of looking for information require different semantic tools. An ontology can be a key tool to support findability but can also provide other enterprise benefits such as support for interoperability between systems and between organizations. The New Zealand Department of Conservation (DOC) commissioned an ontology to support findability in an enterprise content management system, and this initiative sparked considerable interest from other government agencies. This article describes the development of the ontology for DOC and reflects on its potential use in other areas of business.
