Diarrhoea is a common problem in patients with HIV disease. This may be caused by a variety of pathogenic organisms many of which are difficult to isolate. Specific antimicrobial treatment is limited both in availability and effectiveness. Symptomatic treatment need not be delayed. Loperamide and morphine are the antidiarrhoeal drugs of choice.
