Abstract
The purpose of this study is to develop analytical equations using micromechanical methods that can effectively and accurately estimate the mechanical properties of polymer composite materials containing clay nanoparticle fillers. Various modeling techniques using the micromechanical approach are researched, including conventional micromechanical models. An analytical model was developed with consideration of the effects of imperfect bonding between the nanoparticle fillers and the matrix in the composite materials. The mechanical properties of the considered nanocomposites were estimated, and the estimated values were validated using the experimentally determined mechanical properties. For the experimental program, clay/epoxy nanocomposite specimen were fabricated and tested. The developed model was also compared to the conventional and previously developed micromechanical models.
