Abstract
Approximately 40%–70% of doctoral students leave their program without completing their dissertation (Burkholder, 2012). In this article, the authors illustrate how to demystify the dissertation process. Specifically, the authors describe a three-phase model designed to reduce this all-but-dissertation dilemma experienced by many students enrolled in couple and family counseling programs. This model focuses on mentorship, supervision, and structure. The phases and techniques involved in the process are clearly identified and are applicable to doctoral students participating in a group setting or as an individual.
