The example of individual cities can certainly provide important lessons for urban theory, but it is unwise for social scientists to think that any one city provides a controlling template for urban development in this (or any other) period. Instead, we need to base our theories on why patterns vary across cities. In this respect, New York offers a fruitful counterpoint to Los Angeles, with Chicago occupying an intermediate position on a number of critical dimensions.
