Bisexual identity and politics have received unprecedented levels of attention in the US and UK in the last few years. This article begins by asking why it should be precisely now that there has been such an explosion of interest in bisexuality. In doing so it investigates the possible connections between bisexuality and postmodernity, and argues that while bisexuality may be a phenomenon of postmodernity, postmodernist theory - specifically, postmodernist queer theory - has hindered rather than helped our understanding of the relationship between sexual identities, such as queer and bisexual identities, and contemporary social and cultural realities.
