Abstract

■ Most infants experience nappy rash between 7 and 9 months

■ Skin wetness, increase in skin pH and the presence of faecal enzymes are the primary factors associated with skin breakdown

■ Nappy rash is preventable

■ Treatment of nappy rash is often based on trial and error

■ Useful preparations include barrier creams, antibacterials, antifungals and steroids depending on the severity and extent of rash
