Splenectomy is frequently performed in children for various hematologic and autoimmune diseases. Advanced laparoscopic techniques have now been adapted to the pediatric patient making laparoscopic splenectomy an effective and desirable technique. This article reviews the indications for splenectomy, the selection criteria for the laparoscopic approach, and the technique of laparoscopic splenectomy in children. A review of surgical results is included. Copyright a 1998 by W B. Saunders Company
