Abstract
It is common in university courses for some students to arrive at their on-campus classes not having completed their homework assignments. This article offers faculty a weekly beginning-of-class pedagogical approach called the “hat trick” that incentivizes students to complete their reading or other homework assignment for each class. Consistent student preparation allows faculty to conduct the class and learning activities at a more advanced, rather than basic, level. The hat trick also promotes a student-driven focus from the beginning of the class, a high level of student engagement, and skill development in presenting to a group.
