Abstract
There are several trends impacting talent management. These include the use of artificial intelligence (AI), big data (BD) and machine learning (ML) in various talent management processes; changes in the nature of work and the workplace; and the ever-changing demands on leaders as organisations grapple with several changes internally and externally. In this article, we restrict the review to the impact of using AI, BD and ML in various talent management processes. Studies dealing with the used cases of AI in recruitment are considered. The key advantages and extent of the impact for the future are discussed. Studies that delineate contextual factors that are antecedents for the successful deployment of AI in talent management processes in companies are referred to. The dilemma and concerns of using HR BD for talent predictions are considered. AI deployment requires several changes in the ways of working of human resources practitioners and there are legitimate concerns, including bias, ethics, data privacy and loss of control that are associated with AI deployment. We conclude by suggesting that the advantages that can accrue with the deployment of AI in talent management in the medium term can only be realised by better understanding the potential pitfalls and having a well-thought-out mitigation plan. Else the actual gains from AI may fall far short of expectations.
