Abstract
The inflammation of the nasopharynx, which is noticed during the common cold as dryness of the soft palate region, often remains symptomless after the disappearance of this feeling. This latent inflammation exists in most persons but is only discovered with direct abrasion with a cotton applicator.
It was discovered that the stimulation of this inflammatory organ causes abnormal reactions in the autonomic nervous system. From this fact, it is considered that the inflamed nasopharynx induces an irritable state of the autonomic nervous system through the continuous stimulation of the respiratory air stream.
Therefore, the removal of this inflammation with local treatment of the nasopharynx may sedate the irritable state of the autonomic nervous system. This hypothesis was actually confirmed with the clinical experiments.
