Abstract
The author suggests that machinima is evolving and progressively abandoning its juvenile, playful roots to become a mature form of expression, thanks to the diffusion of specialized animation tools and virtual worlds. The author suggests that this new wave of machinima is experiencing a parallel evolutionary path to mainstream film and broadcast media, expanding into genres that include drama, comedy, documentary, educational material, advertising, art, and political activism. Machinima nowadays includes hybrid works, such as virtual installations and mixed live and online events.
